The spectral sensitivity of the Gecko eye in relation to the state of adaptation Abstract The ERG of Gekko gekko has been shown to have two separate components, which are demonstrable by appropriate light adaptation. Adaptation of the eyes to blue light brings out a. fast wave that is prominent in responses to flashes of red light. Adaptation to red light results in the appearance of a slow wave that is prominent in responses to blue light. The scotopic sensitivity curve agrees with the retinal absorption spectrum of the two photopigments found in retinal extracts except at the two extremes of the visible spectrum where the sensitivity is slightly greater than expected by the absorption spectrum. Appropriate adaptation of the eyes to coloured light shows that the sensitivity curve is compound and separable into two portions, one moiety with maximum sensitivity at about 520 nm, the second portion with maximum in the region of 580–590 nm. No evidence was obtained for a mechanism either in the violet region or in the orange-red end of the spectrum. The expectations derived from the presence of two photopigments in retinal extracts were fulfilled. Both pigments are undoubtedly visual pigments.
